A new beachside snack shack is now open in South Boston

Sullivan’s is no longer the only shack slinging hot dogs near Castle Island.

Down at the Rink — which has also been dubbed D@TR — opened in South Boston on Monday, serving hot dogs, sausages, “smasher” burgers, pizza, and boneless chicken nuggets adjacent to the DCR Murphy Memorial Rink. The skating rink is just down the street from Castle Island and Sullivan’s, another popular fast food shack that serves hot dogs and hamburgers.

Driving the menu is co-owner and chef Damian Zedower, a former Mandarin Oriental Boston chef who has also worked at L’Espalier and the Boston Harbor Hotel. With his latest casual project, which is also owned by Boston restaurant vet Sean Sullivan, Zedower has focused on creating healthier, more upscale snack food. Case in point: The DZ dog is 100% Wagyu beef, and both Caesar and tomato and mozzarella salads are available for those looking for a meatless meal. D@TR also offers slushies, lemonade, sodas, and an iced coffee bar. Order at the takeout window, then dine at nearby picnic tables or on the beach across the street.

A major draw to D@TR is its price point — nothing on the menu costs more than $8 — and there is free parking located in the rink’s parking lot. The snack shack is currently open seven days a week.

D@TR; 1880 William J Day Blvd.; daily from 11 a.m.–9 p.m.
